Last week, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro signed a decree blocking national access to X for 10 days, escalating the ongoing feud between Maduro and Musk, which has spilled over into X posts.

“The two men have exchanged insults since Mr. Maduro’s controversial re-election. Mr. Musk has called the Venezuelan leader a “dictator” and a “clown”, while Mr. Maduro has accused Mr. Musk of inciting hatred and civil unrest.”
The core of Maduro’s concern seems to be Musk’s posts potentially inciting unrest in the region. The Venezuelan Government is also pressuring social platforms to restrict content it deems as dissent or terrorism, leading to the temporary ban on X.
Venezuela, with around 1.55 million X users, is a relatively small market for X. However, losing these users and associated ad revenue during the ban is still a setback.
In Brazil, authorities have demanded X to shut down specific accounts spreading false information and hate speech. Musk’s refusal to comply with a Brazilian court order has further fueled tensions, resulting in threats to local X employees.
