Reflecting on the Evolution of AI Since 2012: A Look Back at the Progress

Twelve years ago, on October 22, 2012, Andrej Karpathy wrote a groundbreaking blog post titled “The State of Computer Vision and AI: We Are Really, Really Far Away”. In this post, he delved into the world of computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) at that time, using a playful image of former President Barack Obama toeing the scale as a metaphor for the complexity of AI.

Karpathy highlighted the immense knowledge AI models needed to possess in order to interpret images accurately. It wasn’t just about understanding the pixels in an image; it was about comprehending the context and nuances that made an image meaningful.

“What would it take for a computer to understand this image as you or I do? I challenge you to think explicitly of all the pieces of knowledge that have to fall in place for it to make sense.”

Fast forward to today, and we can see how far AI has come since that time. The advancements in computer vision and AI have been nothing short of remarkable. From facial recognition to autonomous vehicles, AI is now a ubiquitous presence in our daily lives.

“It is mind-boggling that all of the above inferences unfold from a brief…”
