Unicoin: A Leading Cryptocurrency Firm Faces Security Breach
A leading cryptocurrency firm recently made headlines when it revealed that its employees were unable to use their corporate productivity apps for four days due to a security breach orchestrated by a threat actor.
Unicoin, the official cryptocurrency of the reality TV show Unicorn Hunters, prides itself on being a “more stable alternative” to most digital currencies. However, the company found itself in hot water when it discovered that an unknown threat actor had gained access to its Google G-Suite account on August 9.
The threat actor promptly changed the passwords for all users with an @unicoin.com email address, effectively locking them out of essential tools like G-Mail and G-Drive. It wasn’t until August 13 that the company was able to remove the threat actor’s access and restore functionality to its internal users.
While the event did not result in any monetary loss of coins, Unicoin is still investigating the extent of the breach. Interestingly, the company also revealed that a contractor had been dismissed after “traces of identity forgery” were linked to them.
Further discrepancies were discovered during a personal check of corporate users, including anomalies in personal data and traces of hacked messages and email accounts of specific managers.
Despite these challenges, Unicoin maintains that the security breach has not had a material impact on its finances or operations. However, concerns remain about the involvement of the fired contractor and the potential for future threats.
As the cryptocurrency landscape continues to evolve, companies like Unicoin must remain vigilant against sophisticated threat actors. Recent reports suggest that threat actors are adopting social engineering tactics to target crypto firms, highlighting the need for robust security measures.
