The Power of Generative AI for Communication Service Providers (CSPs)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just a buzzword anymore. It presents a significant opportunity for Communication Service Providers (CSPs) to transform their existing business models and drive greater efficiency and growth in a challenging market. To support the global telco industry in this transformation, TM Forum has collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch GAMIT, a Generative AI Maturity Interactive Tool.

GAMIT draws on anonymized, aggregated data from surveys conducted with over 200 AI decision-makers at CSPs worldwide. It enables CSPs to benchmark their Generative AI (GenAI) maturity, identify priority use cases, and quickly move from development to production at scale.

The AI opportunity for telcos is vast, with reports estimating up to $100 billion in incremental value and $180 billion in productivity gains through GenAI. However, the adoption of GenAI in the industry is still in its early stages, with many CSPs struggling to integrate AI as a native element across all operations.

According to data from GAMIT, only a quarter of operators feel equipped to leverage advanced AI techniques. Leadership roles focused on AI are limited, and most operators face barriers in moving GenAI initiatives from proof-of-concept to production stages.

GAMIT’s benchmarking model is based on six pillars of GenAI maturity, including technology understanding, organization roles and responsibilities, data readiness, governance, business objectives, and AI use case deployment.

George Glass, the CTO of TM Forum, highlighted the value of GAMIT in addressing the challenges faced by CSPs in fully realizing the benefits of Generative AI. He emphasized the importance of the tool in providing a clear benchmark for GenAI maturity and a roadmap for scaling it across organizations.

GAMIT, developed through collaboration between TM Forum, its members, and AWS, aims to help CSPs accelerate their AI journey and thrive in an AI-driven future. It offers a user-friendly, interactive platform that delivers practical value to the telco industry globally.

Ishwar Parulkar, the Chief Technologist of Telecom at AWS, emphasized the significance of supporting Generative AI in the telco sector. Through close collaboration with CSPs, AWS aims to accelerate their GenAI journey and create measurable outcomes.
