TikTok Partners with WHO to Combat Health Misinformation

In a bid to further limit health misinformation on the platform, TikTok has announced a partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) for an expanded fact-checking initiative.

The collaboration will see TikTok teaming up with WHO’s Fides group, a network of over 800 healthcare professionals active on social media, to enhance its medical fact-checking capabilities.

Fides aims to tackle the spread of health-related misinformation by providing factual explainers and insights into key health topics discussed on various social media platforms. Now, TikTok will be joining forces with Fides to amplify their reach and impact.

Empowering Fides Creators

Through this partnership, Fides network creators in several countries will join TikTok to create evidence-based content on health and scientific research. TikTok has also pledged a $3M donation to support WHO’s efforts in destigmatizing mental health issues and fostering a supportive online community.

TikTok believes that Fides creators will play a vital role in posting informative content and expert insights to dispel misinformation, particularly harmful trends that have emerged on social media platforms, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Combatting Health Misinformation

A recent survey revealed that public confidence in approved vaccines has declined, highlighting the need for accurate health information dissemination. TikTok’s collaboration with Fides comes at a crucial time when health misinformation continues to proliferate online, impacting public perceptions on crucial health issues.

Educating Younger Audiences

One of TikTok’s key objectives is to educate and engage younger audiences on social issues. The platform’s partnership with Fides aligns with this goal by providing expert insights into trending health topics and offering unbiased information to combat misinformation effectively.

Moreover, TikTok’s emphasis on social good initiatives, such as partnering with scientists on STEM content, reflects its commitment to promoting positive educational content on the platform.

Training and Support

TikTok will also collaborate with Fides creators to provide training on best practices and tips for creating impactful content on the platform. By empowering Fides experts with the necessary tools and knowledge, TikTok aims to enhance their outreach and influence in combating health misinformation.
