Swisscom Broadcast has partnered with Nokia to revolutionize public safety and industry operations in Switzerland through the deployment of a cutting-edge nationwide Drones-as-a-Service network.

The collaboration will see the deployment of 300 Nokia Drone-in-a-Box units, enabling emergency response, perimeter protection, and infrastructure inspection. This innovative solution aims to enhance the safety of public safety workers and support Switzerland’s Industry 4.0 initiatives.

The project represents a milestone in Nokia’s Drone Networks portfolio, following the successful deployment in Belgium with Citymesh. By leveraging mission-critical industrial edge computing and 3GPP technologies, the network will enable beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) autonomous drone operations, ensuring efficient and safe mission execution.

Apart from improving first responders’ safety, the drones will optimize resource allocation and provide crucial real-time information during emergencies. This capability enhances situational awareness and aids in swift decision-making.

Swisscom Broadcast’s Drone-as-a-Service network will enable public safety agencies to request drone flights for various operations seamlessly. Nokia and Swisscom Broadcast will provide expertise, compliance support, and data analytics to ensure efficient service delivery across Switzerland.

Furthermore, the deployment will enhance worker safety in industries by facilitating infrastructure inspections and asset detection without the need for manual intervention. The integration of Nokia Drone Networks into the MXIE platform architecture enables easy scalability for additional industrial applications.

The collaboration emphasizes the turnkey Drone-in-a-Box solution provided by Nokia, including the drone, docking station, ground control station, payload, software, and service components. The solution supports third-party integrations for various applications, enhancing operational efficiency.

Through this partnership, Swisscom Broadcast and Nokia aim to drive innovation in industrial use cases, automation, and BVLOS operations, positioning Switzerland as a pioneer in drone technology adoption.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Nokia on this significant project in Switzerland. Our joint efforts will enable us to accelerate the deployment of Drones-as-a-Service network, benefiting our customers in public safety and industrial sectors,” said Dominik Müller, CEO at Swisscom Broadcast.

Raghav Sahgal, president of cloud and network services at Nokia, commented, “We are proud to partner with Swisscom Broadcast on this groundbreaking project. The Nokia Drone Networks solution, powered by MXIE technology, will elevate Swiss enterprises’ access to superior Drones-as-a-Service offerings for enhanced safety and operational efficiency.”
