Samsung Enhances IoT Security with Knox Matrix for AI Home Appliances
In a bid to strengthen IoT security, Samsung is extending its renowned Knox platform to include AI-powered home appliances. This move marks a significant advancement in safeguarding connected devices within the smart home ecosystem.
The Knox Matrix, traditionally reserved for mobile devices and TVs, will now provide security features for a variety of home appliances. This integrated protection system allows interconnected devices to monitor each other for potential security threats and promptly notify users of any protective actions taken.
According to Miyoung Yoo, EVP and Head of the Software Development Team at Samsung’s Digital Appliances Business, the expansion of Knox to home appliances is a response to the growing importance of security in the evolving AI ecosystem.
Samsung Knox Matrix: Reinventing IoT Security with Blockchain Technology
At the core of Samsung’s fortified security strategy lies Knox Matrix, a solution that utilizes private blockchain technology to safeguard connected devices and networks. This innovative approach comprises three key components:
- Trust chain: Using blockchain technology to enable devices to monitor each other for security threats and alert users of protective measures.
- Cross platform: Ensuring consistent security standards across all connected devices, irrespective of their operating systems or platforms.
- Credential sync: Implementing end-to-end encryption to securely share and synchronize data between devices.
These features are set to be rolled out to major products, starting with refrigerators equipped with AI Family Hub, in the upcoming year.
Passkeys for Enhanced User Convenience and Security
In a bid to enhance user convenience and security, Samsung has introduced passkey support for its AI-enabled home appliances. This digital credential, part of the Credential Sync feature, enables users to log in to appliance apps and compatible websites using smartphone biometrics such as fingerprints.
Samsung Knox Vault: Hardware-based Protection
Building on its security offerings, Samsung plans to integrate the Knox Vault hardware chip into its AI home appliances from next year. The Knox Vault will securely store sensitive personal information separate from the main system, providing an additional layer of protection against software and physical hacking attempts.
Recognition for IoT Security Commitment
Samsung’s commitment to IoT security has been acknowledged globally. The Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ received the highest Diamond rating in UL Solutions’ IoT Security Rating, marking a significant milestone in appliance security. This recognition has extended to other Samsung products like the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo and the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI.
With Samsung’s proactive approach to cybersecurity, including regular internal cyberattack simulations, the company is spearheading the drive towards safer connected homes.
