In Memory of Rance Cleaveland: A Legend in Computer Science
On March 27, 2024, the world lost a brilliant mind and a dear friend, Rance Cleaveland. He was a professor at The University of Maryland at College Park, known for his groundbreaking work in software engineering, program verification, and model checking. Rance’s impact was felt both in academia and in the practical world, as he ran his own successful company while also contributing to theoretical advancements.
Joining UMCP in 2005, Rance quickly became a key figure in the Computer Science Department. I had the privilege of knowing him before his tenure at UMCP, and our monthly lunches were always filled with insightful discussions about the department and the latest in computer science.
He may have been labeled a Software Engineer in America, but in Europe, Rance would have been hailed as a theorist for his pioneering work. His legacy lives on through his research, teachings, and the impact he had on countless students and colleagues.
