Enhancing low-quality photos is now easier than ever with Microsoft Photos’ new super resolution mode. Whether you’re trying to sharpen a blurry image or salvage old print photos, this new tool uses artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance and enlarge an image up to eight times the size of the original.

The latest version of Microsoft Photos, available in the Windows 11 Insider Preview, introduces the super resolution option to all Windows Insiders. This feature is perfect for improving low-quality images, enhancing photos for printing or large displays, and cropping images without sacrificing resolution.

While the super resolution tool requires a Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC due to its use of the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for on-device enhancements, some users have reported accessing and using the feature on non-Copilot+ PCs with the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview and Microsoft Photos versions.

During testing, some users found the results of the super resolution tool to be underwhelming, particularly on blurry or grainy images. However, Microsoft has also introduced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in the Windows 11 Insider Preview, allowing users to detect text in photos and screenshots for easy copying and use in other applications.

While the effectiveness of the super resolution tool may vary depending on the quality of the images, it’s a promising addition to Microsoft Photos for Windows 11 users. To try out these new features, make sure you’re part of Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program and have the latest updates installed.
