If you want a programming job, you better ensure you’re proficient in SQL, Python, and Java. According to the 2024 IEEE Spectrum Top Programming Languages report, these are the top languages that employers are looking for.

Between the 2022 Top Languages Report and the current 2024 analysis, there have been some changes in the top dozen languages on the jobs list. Java and Python have swapped second and third positions, with Python coming in just behind SQL. Python’s popularity for AI-related development is a significant factor in its high demand.

TypeScript has replaced JavaScript in fourth position, showing a trend towards more reliable data typing in languages, benefiting from its association with Microsoft. SAS, a statistical analysis language, has surged into the fifth slot, reflecting the growing demand for data-related programming in the AI-driven industry.

Traditional language C has dropped off the top 12 list, while Kotlin, used in Android app development and data science, has entered the ranking. Ruby, once popular for web development, no longer features among the top languages.

Understanding programming language popularity involves more than job listings, but currently, Python, SQL, and Java are essential skills. For JavaScript developers, transitioning to TypeScript is advisable to stay relevant.
