Breaking News: A non-profit healthcare organization (HCO) dedicated to serving senior citizens, The New Jewish Home, has recently disclosed the extent of a major ransomware breach that occurred earlier this year.
Based in New York City, The New Jewish Home has informed over 104,000 customers about the incident following a filing with the Maine Office of Attorney General (OAG).
In a notice released in February, the HCO revealed that a data breach was discovered on January 7. Initially uncertain of the number of individuals affected, the organization later confirmed the devastating impact of the breach.
According to the breach notification, the compromised information may have included details such as names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, payment card information, financial account details, passport numbers, medical records, and treatment information of patients and other community members of The New Jewish Home.
After a thorough investigation, the final count of victims was determined on July 17. The breach notification letter explained that unauthorized access to certain files on the network had occurred, prompting an extensive review of the compromised data.
While there is no evidence of fraudulent misuse of the information, The New Jewish Home is taking precautionary measures by offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services to those affected.
It was reported that the notorious ransomware group ALPHV/BlackCat claimed responsibility for the breach, although the non-profit never confirmed this. The group has since disappeared, leaving many to speculate about an exit scam.
Earlier this year, the same ransomware collective was responsible for a significant ransomware breach at UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare.
