Instagram Adds Music to Profile Feature: Bringing Back the MySpace Vibes

It’s 2007 MySpace all over again, with Instagram now allowing you to include your favorite song on your IG profile, giving you the chance to showcase your music taste to profile visitors.

Music has always been a defining factor for many people, as it speaks volumes about who you are as a person. This was the inspiration behind MySpace’s song feature that allowed autoplaying tracks on profiles.

Instagram’s version of adding music to your profile is a bit different – the song won’t autoplay in the app, which is a relief. However, it does give you a platform to showcase your current favorite track.

According to Instagram, “We’re excited to announce that you can now add a song to your profile, giving you more ways to express yourself through music. Your profile song selection will live on your profile until you swap out the song.”

So, isn’t that cool? It’s an opportunity to promote your favorite bands and artists while letting your music taste speak for itself through your profile.

Although Facebook has tested a similar feature with minimal response, Instagram has now rolled it out, specifically targeting younger users.

But why introduce it now? Instagram has been looking to enhance its music elements overall, possibly in preparation for a future without TikTok in the U.S. TikTok has become a vital platform for music promotion, so Instagram aims to position itself as the go-to alternative for music promotion in the social media landscape if TikTok is removed.

Instagram has also introduced “Add Yours Music” stickers, enabling users to respond to Stories with tracks. Additionally, it has added music in Notes, song lyrics display in Reels, and other music-related features.

This addition aligns well with Instagram’s broader strategy and may resonate well with younger audiences, especially those who didn’t experience the days of cringeworthy MySpace profile editing.

So, while this update may be valuable, remember not to judge people solely based on their music tastes.
