Welcome to the Future of Instagram Profiles: Vertical Grid Display

Instagram profiles are about to undergo a major transformation that could revolutionize the way you approach your IG posting strategy.

As you may have noticed, Instagram is currently testing a new vertical grid display on user profiles, moving away from the traditional square-shaped thumbnail images to longer stills in-stream. This new format is designed to better align with videos, especially Reels, and create a more visually appealing profile grid.

According to Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri, this update is a response to the shifting nature of content on the platform. Mosseri explains, “The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical; it’s either 4:3 in a photo or 9:16 in a video, and cropping it down to a square is pretty brutal, so I’m hoping we can figure out a way to manage this transition.”

This change may seem subtle, as it simply makes your images rectangular, but the impact on your profile presentation and content strategy could be significant. The new format gives each panel more space in the grid, increasing user expectations around video content.

As Instagram realigns its platform around video content, it’s important to stay alert to these changes and adapt your posting approach accordingly. Expect a shift in how you grab attention with your content on IG, as the platform evolves to meet the demands of modern content creators.
