IBM has recently introduced an upgraded quantum computer to its collection of machines in its data center located in Poughkeepsie, New York. This new addition, known as Heron r2, is an enhancement over its predecessor, Heron r1. With 156 qubits compared to the previous version’s 133, the Heron r2 offers improved gate fidelities, boasting an Error per Layer Gate (EPLG) measurement of 0.4% as opposed to the prior version’s 0.7%.
In addition to the Heron processors, IBM Cloud also includes 10 more units of the 127 qubit Eagle processors. While the Eagle systems have fewer qubits and lower gate fidelities compared to the Heron family, IBM assures that all these systems can operate at utility-scale and deliver unparalleled results that cannot be achieved through conventional means on classical computers.
