Healthcare organizations are prime targets for ransomware attacks, accounting for 20% of all victims among critical infrastructure entities in the US in 2023.

According to the 2023 Internet Crime Report from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), over 20% of ransomware attacks on critical infrastructure organizations in the US targeted the healthcare sector in 2023. IC3 documented 1,193 attack reports, with 249 affecting healthcare organizations.
The issue gained further attention after reports surfaced that medical company Change Healthcare paid $22 million to ransomware attackers following a disruptive attack in late February that impacted nationwide prescriptions.
