Arvola Chan ’74, SM ’76, EE ’78, PhD ’80, reflects on his journey at MIT, where he earned four degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. Chan credits scholarships and research assistantships for his success and is now giving back as the planned-giving chair for the Class of 1974 50th Reunion Gift Committee.

Chan is encouraging his classmates to join him in making a planned gift benefiting MIT. His own generous bequest will support graduate student fellowships, while he and his wife have established the Albert Tzong-Jyh Chan Memorial Scholarship in honor of their late son. The first award of the scholarship is set to be presented this fall.

Chan shares his vision for the Chan Memorial Scholarship: “This fund is designed to uplift deserving students with the potential to make a lasting impact on the world. I hope this initiative inspires others to reflect on their legacy and consider how they can shape the future for generations to come, embodying the ethos of giving and excellence at MIT.”
