Unleashing the Power of Open Source: EMBL-EBI Shares 200 Million Protein Structures for Research

Big data in biology holds the key to groundbreaking discoveries that have the potential to benefit humankind. This belief is at the heart of EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), a leading institution in the field since its establishment in 1994 at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton, UK.

As part of the renowned European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL-EBI is backed by over 20 member states and dedicated to advancing research in genomics, proteins, small molecules, and various data models.

Championing open data in life sciences, EMBL-EBI partnered with DeepMind to launch the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database. This initiative grants free access to over 200 million protein structure predictions, revolutionizing the way scientists approach research globally.

Since its inception in 2021 with 365,000 predictions, the database has expanded exponentially, now encompassing predictions for nearly all known proteins in science. This invaluable resource is driving advancements in biological understanding on an unprecedented scale.
