The High Cost of Public Cloud Providers: Are They Worth It?

Public cloud providers are notorious for their high costs, and many professionals in the industry are starting to take notice. A recent report by Civo, a company specializing in public cloud services, shed light on the state of the cloud market. With a survey of over 500 cloud industry professionals, the report focused on the three largest cloud providers: Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Amazon Web Services. The findings revealed that the cloud computing market is facing “significant challenges,” with prices becoming more of a burden for enterprises rather than a cost-saving opportunity.

Cloud was never cheap

Despite the promises of affordability, cloud computing was never truly cheap. In my last book, I highlighted the misconception that cloud computing offered a less expensive alternative to traditional on-premises deployments. The reality is that many enterprises are now realizing the hidden costs associated with cloud services.

While cloud computing does offer benefits such as agility and scalability, these benefits may not always align with the needs of every business. In fact, some enterprises have found cost savings in returning to on-premises deployments, taking advantage of hardware price reductions that can cut costs by as much as one-third. This strategy works well for businesses with stable usage patterns that do not heavily rely on the cloud’s agility and scalability features.

Ultimately, the decision to invest in public cloud providers comes down to finding the right balance between cost and value. While the cloud offers modern conveniences and flexibility, businesses must weigh these benefits against the potential financial implications. It’s clear that the cloud is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and enterprises must carefully evaluate their needs before committing to expensive cloud services.
