Nokia has officially become a part of the AI Pact, an initiative aimed at ensuring compliance with the European Union’s AI Act.
The AI Act, which became effective in August 2024, is a regulatory framework that governs the use of AI systems based on their risk levels. Companies are required to comply with the Act’s obligations in stages over the next three years.
The AI Pact is designed to help businesses prepare for full compliance with the Act by adjusting their existing AI compliance processes and sharing experiences through EU-organised workshops.
Ingrid Viitanen, Nokia Strategy and Technology’s general counsel, stated, “Nokia’s AI Pact commitments demonstrate our ongoing dedication to responsibly incorporating artificial intelligence into our products and services. We have established an AI Governance Framework program to enhance our internal AI processes and foster trust with stakeholders. At the same time, we are actively contributing to developing industry standards that align with the AI Act’s requirements. We are excited to collaborate and share our insights transparently with industry peers and the EU AI Office.”
Nokia Bell Labs, the company’s research arm, is a frontrunner in AI technologies and their applications in communication networks and industrial automation. With a focus on Responsible AI, Nokia Bell Labs outlined six guiding principles for AI research and development in 2022. These principles, emphasizing fairness, reliability, privacy, transparency, sustainability, and accountability, remain pertinent as Nokia aligns with the telecom industry’s growing emphasis on environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
