The world of generative AI apps is booming. Curious about which apps are drawing in users and which ones are fading into obscurity? Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz sheds light on this with its latest Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps list.

Every six months, the firm analyzes data to determine the most popular AI apps. Two lists are created: one based on unique visits and the other on total monthly active users. Unsurprisingly, ChatGPT dominates both lists.

While there is some overlap between the lists, only a few apps manage to secure a spot on both. Let’s dive deeper into the data.

In terms of unique monthly visits, ChatGPT leads the pack by a significant margin. Other notable mentions include Character.ai, Perplexity, Claude, and Suno in the top five. Noteworthy mentions in the top 10 are JanitorAI, Quillbot, Poe, LinerAI, and CivitAI.

When looking at total active monthly users, ChatGPT holds the top position once again, but the rest of the top five looks entirely different, with Microsoft Edge, Photomath, Nova, and Bing rounding out the list. Other mentions in the top 10 include Remini, Chat & Ask AI, Brainly, Meitu, and Character.AI.

What does this data reveal? The majority of AI apps are being used for creative purposes. Around 52% of the apps focus on content creation or editing, with a particular emphasis on image and video creation. Voice and music generators also prove to be popular choices.

The surge of video-generating apps like Luna and Viggle, as well as the rise of music generator Suno, indicates a growing interest in AI-powered video and music content.

While users are eager to explore generative AI apps for creating photos, voices, or music, their preferences for subscription-based apps paint a different picture. The top apps predominantly fall into two categories: multi-purpose AI apps (such as ChatGPT, Bing, or Microsoft Edge) and niche apps like PhotoMath.

As we await the next list, it will be intriguing to see if the surge in Photomath usage for end-of-year math assistance translates into sustained popularity during the summer break.

According to Andreessen Horowitz, the landscape of generative apps is evolving, with a notable rise in apps focusing on generating content beyond images. Whereas image generators dominated previous lists, they now make up just 41% of the generative apps featured.
