IQM Quantum Computers has secured a significant €25 million purchase order for two cutting-edge Radiance quantum computers. These state-of-the-art quantum machines are set to enhance the Euro-Q-Exa hybrid system at the prestigious Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) in Garching, Germany. The systems, boasting 54 qubits and 150 qubits respectively, are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2025 and by the end of 2026. The funding for this groundbreaking initiative is provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
The Euro-Q-Exa project aims to integrate these advanced quantum systems with high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, creating a platform for the European research community to access hybrid HPC-quantum workflows. This collaboration is poised to accelerate scientific advancements and drive research and development efforts by leveraging both classical and quantum computing capabilities within the broader European supercomputing network.
Researchers will have early access to the system starting in spring 2025, facilitating seamless development phases and enabling them to harness the power of quantum technology. The project is strongly supported by EuroHPC JU, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
IQM, a leader in the field of quantum computing, had previously introduced Germany’s first hybrid HPC-quantum computer equipped with a 20-qubit processor. This milestone collaboration with LRZ paves the way for ongoing partnerships, positioning Europe at the forefront of quantum computing innovation.
